Installation Instructions - Measuring

Stairs Installation Measuring nosings

Individually measure each step - do not assume that all steps will be identical. Start at the top of the flight and work down keeping numbered notes for each step. Where edge trims are to be fitted, steps should be measured oversize to allow for trimming.

Stairs Installation Measuring curves

Individually measure each curve - do not assume that all step curves will be identical. All measurements should be shown on a detailed template. Place paper felt or card on top of the curved step and draw, using a thick marker pen, round the underside of the template following the contour of the step. Cut the paper accurately to the inside of the line. Clearly mark top and front of template.

Stairs Installation Measuring edge trims

Individually measure each step angle - do not assume that all steps will be identical. Start at the top of the flight and work down keeping numbered notes for each step angle.

Installation Instructions - Fitting and maintenance

Stairs Installation Preparation

Ensure the steps are solidly built and flat; free from paint, grease, dirt, dust or adhesive residues. Make good any imperfections with either a repair compound (Ardurapid 45) latex screed (F5000) or gap filling adhesive (F577).

Stairs Installation Drilling

All aluminium and PVCu stair nosings should be drilled and screwed to subfloor as well as being glued with our Floorfix adhesive (F577 or F579). Nosings can be ordered pre-cut and pre drilled, but when drilling nosings on site, offset the drill holes in the pattern shown below, starting 75mm from the ends of each length.

Stairs Installation Double Channel

Staggered 12mm from the back edge of the back nosing insert and then central on the front insert.

Stairs Installation

Stairs Installation Single Channel

Staggerd 12mm from the back edge of the nosing insert and then central on the insert.

Stairs Installation

Minimum of 3 holes equally spaced
600 - 999mm 3 holes equally spaced
1000 - 1499mm 4 holes equally spaced
1500 - 1999mm 5 holes equally spaced
> 2000 mm 6+ holes equally spaced

Nosings with prefitted inserts should be drilled with a sharp countersunk bit. Bit size suitable for No.6 screws on standard nosings and No. 8 screws on heavy duty nosings. The screw head should be 2.5mm below the insert surface. PVC plugs are then positioned to ensure secret fixing.

Stairs Installation Installation

Stair Nosings are normally fitted from the top of the staircase downwards. The fitting sequence should be (1) Stair edge trims/welded angles (2) Riser floorcovering (3) Stair nosing (4) Tread cover. (Vinyls and smooth floorcoverings should be fitted from the base upwards using a cove former to radius the intersection of the tread and riser beneath the floorcovering).

Stairs Installation Fitting of edge trims and welded angles

´ Prior to fitting check the fit of each angle.
´ Scribe the back edge of each angle to form a butt or mitre angle with its neighbour.
´ Cut to size.
´ Apply a zig-zag bead of adhesive to the side of the step and to the underside of each trim.
´ Press both surfaces together to spread the adhesive.
´ Remove trim and allow adhesive to cure for approximately 10-20 minutes (depending upon site conditions).
´ Fit trim into final position.
´ Cut tab away or remove if required once adhesive has set.

Stairs Installation Fitting and maintenance Fixing of Stair nosing

´ Prior to fitting check the fit of each stair nosing to be used on each step.
´ Ensuring the nosing is pushed tight against the riser, mark the screw locations through the drill holes.
´ Drill holes and plug the stair.
´ Apply a zig-zag bead of adhesive to each step front and the underside of each nosing.
´ Press both surfaces together and agitate to spread the adhesive.
´ Remove nosing and allow adhesive to cure for approximately 10-20 minutes (depending upon site conditions).
´ Fit nosing into final position and screw down firmly. ´ Fit insert plug with a drop of adhesive.
´ Before use let the adhesive dry completely.

Stairs Installation Maintenance

´ To ensure the stair nosings keep their appearance, they should be cleaned regularly.
´ Inserts and PVCu can be cleaned using a damp cloth and mild detergent.
´ Wipe dry with a clean cloth, as stair nosings can be hazardous when wet.
´ Aluminium can be lightly burnished with steel wool.
´ Polishes will reduce anti-slip properties and solvent cleaners are not suitable.

Light colour inserts will be inclined to soil quicker than darker colours when in use. White and yellow inserts can be supplied unscoured for ease of maintenance.
